Big Apple’s big Pride
Celebrities shake it at Pride, Ian McKellen goes solo, and the return of Marc Jacobs’ boy

The ‘mos were out in droves during New York’s Pride celebration on Sunday, June 25. Even an afternoon downpour didn’t slow the party down. Dish can picture the sewer rats now covered with glitter from the afternoon washout.

Celebrities peppered the parade and the festival, including a handful of politicians who were shaking the hands of dykes on bikes and kissing drag queens. Openly gay New York City Council Speaker CHRISTINE QUINN served as grand marshal for the parade and walked alongside Mayor MICHAEL BLOOMBERG and Sen. HILLARY CLINTON (D-N.Y.). Good to see the senator there, despite her disappointing position on granting full marriage rights to gay couples.

Also at the parade in full glam glory was drag diva KEVIN AVIANCE who was attacked in New York’s East Village in the early morning hours of June 10. Since the assault, which resulted in a fractured knee and a broken jaw. Aviance’s jaw has been wired shut to facilitate the healing process.

However, he appeared on the HX magazine parade float on Sunday, sans wire, in a white bejeweled top hat and vest, plus little white sparkly panties.

The surprise guest at the annual Pride Pier Dance was none other than J.LO. Past guests include JANET JACKSON and WHITNEY HOUSTON, so this is apparently a stop for all divas.

Not to be outdone by their gay owners, the Big Apple’s fey pets had their own celebration and contest on Saturday, June 24. None other than LIZA MINNELLI judged the categories of cutest pet and the butch/femme fashion showdown. All money went to the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, a group of no-kill animal shelters.

The grand prize winner got to be in the parade, but unfortunately, Liza didn’t go along for the ride.

Gay chivalry prevails

The brilliant gay actor IAN MCKELLEN is scheduled to perform his one-man stage show, “A Knight Out in L.A.” on July 22 and 23 according to the website of the University of California, Los Angeles. He’s performing the show to benefit the Young Actors Company, a non-profit group that helps give young adults the chance to perform on stage regardless of their backgrounds.

McKellen has performed this show all over the world for various charitable events.

“I’m delighted to be back onstage in Los Angeles, supporting the work of the Los Angeles Young Actors Company,” the website quotes McKellen as saying. “This show lets me revisit my favorite parts, tell a few stories and present Gandalf onstage for the very first time.”

Much of closet-case Hollywood could take a page from the knighted actor’s book and do good works while being gay as Gandalf is gray.

Back in vogue

Gay fashion designer MARC JACOBS has supposedly hooked up again with former escort JASON PRESTON according to the New York Post’s Page Six.

The couple split up earlier in June when their vast age differences got in the way of their relationship. Jacobs, 46, told Pride magazine in June that the two weren’t in the same place in their lives.

“I have to be in bed at 11:30,” Jacobs said. “He’s 25 and wants to go to clubs every night.” Imagine.

According to Page Six, the two, ironically, were recently spotted at a gay bar. They also reportedly met up with gay porn director MICHAEL LUCAS at another hot spot in town. The smut connection makes total sense given that, according to Preston’s Friendster.com page, one of his favorite books is porn queen JENNA JAMESON’S riveting read “How to Make Love Like a Porn Star.”

At least if the on-again-off-again pair stays together, Preston doesn’t have to get a laser removal of the “Marc Jacobs” tattoo he has on his forearm.
