If we embrace homosexuality as a proper basis for marriage, we are saying that it’s possible to have a marriage state that in principle excludes procreation and is based simply on the premise of selfish hedonism.
GOP Senate candidate Alan Keyes, who when asked whether “selfish hedonist” applied to Mary Cheney, the vice president’s lesbian daughter, said “of course she is” (Sirius OutQ radio, Aug. 30)

Dick Cheney may or may not like to hear the truth, but it can be spoken.
Alan Keyes, on Cheney’s acceptance of his daughter Mary’s relationship with another woman (Sirius OutQ radio, Aug. 30)

Selfish hedonism? Has anyone seen Dr. Keyes look at a microphone or a television camera? That’s hedonism.
Rick Garcia, director of Equality Illinois, a non-partisan gay-rights group (Chicago Tribune, Sept. 1)

It’s important to affirm what we all thought was already in the Oregon Constitution: Marriage is a sacred covenant between one man and one man.
Voter pamphlet with an embarrassing typo sent out by Oregon House Majority Leader Wayne Scott (R), who opposes gay marriage (KATU.com, Portland, Sept. 1)

To those critics who are so pessimistic about our economy, I say: ‘Don’t be economic girlie men!’
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, speaking to the Republican National Convention; CNN reported that focus group polling showed the line as the most popular in his speech (Aug. 31)

Marriage between a man and a woman isn’t something Republicans invented, but it is something Republicans will defend.
Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.), speaking at the GOP convention (Associated Press, Aug. 31)

Despite my strong desire to prove my case in a court of law, I have decided not to proceed with my suit. … It’s clear to all that [New Jersey Gov. James] McGreevey resigned because he sexually harassed me and that a man of his standing would not have resigned because of sexual orientation or having had an extramarital affair.
Former aide Golan Cipel, in a press release issued in Hebrew from his native Israel, where he is in seclusion with his family (Associated Press, Aug. 31)

New Jerseyans are left with the unappealing prospect that one man who is not a New Jersey citizen, not even an American citizen, might have forced a governor elected with 56 percent of the vote out of office.
David Rebovich, a Rider University political scientist, speculating that Golan Cipel may have used money threats to bluff New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey into announcing he is gay and resigning (Associated Press, Aug. 31)

Apparently [Governor McGreevey] was having an affair with a homosexual Israeli poet, who he appointed the state’s homeland security adviser. Which partially explains why New Jersey’s terror alert colors were parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.
HBO talk show host Bill Maher (Associated Press, Aug. 27)

It’s not about the Blade. It’s about people’s privacy being respected. I do not ask employees their personal sexual orientation, and I’m very proud of everyone I’ve been associated with in this campaign.’’
Florida Senate candidate Mel Martinez, who won the GOP primary on Aug. 31, reacting to a story in the Washington Blade and its affiliated papers about two gay men working as the top fund-raiser and outside consultant for his campaign, which has been stridently anti-gay (Miami Herald, Aug. 29)
