Puttin’ on the glitz all for a good cause
This year’s DIFFA fund-raiser promises to be a sexy, glittery departure from the event staged in years past

White, silver or glitter garb required. No exceptions!

Expect the unexpected at the annual DIFFA Wreath Collection and Glitter Ball, Saturday, December 11, at Deborah Colton Gallery.

From snowmen costumes to glitter gowns, Design Industries Foundation Fighting Aids Houston has planned a glitzy and glamorous evening for holiday partygoers to raise money to fight HIV/AIDS.

“I am so proud to be involved with an organization that does so much good and attracts such creative volunteers to plan and execute events like this one,” said Rodney Honerkamp, Executive Director of DIFFA Houston.

Honerkamp admits this is a daring departure for the Houston chapter (the invitation features a series of pictures of a young man preparing his drag garb) but he said he believes in the vision of event Co-Chair Gail Rubin.

“I was involved with DIFFA’s New York chapter for several years before I moved to Houston,” Rubin said. “I wanted to bring an excitement and freshness to what was already a successful and popular event that truly reflected the creative vibe that DIFFA represents.”

Rubin finds the Houston arts community to be as creative as it’s New York counterpart.

“The art community in Houston isn’t as in your face as it is in New York, but it’s here! It’s thriving and just waiting to expose itself,” she said.

Originality and creative genius are the hallmarks of DIFFA’s unique events. The organization is also known for its expertise in cause-related marketing and easily attracts strong corporate support.

Rubin, along with her co-chair, Bernardo Siaotong, continue the DIFFA creative tradition by taking the glitter theme throughout the party.

“The event planners have provided us with an evening of fun and fantasy,” Honerkamp added. “From white and silver clad valets to the specialty drink of the evening, the “glitter-tini” (that will have edible glitter floating on top) the theme is everywhere.”

Glitter Ball guests will also be treated to an “outrageous goodie bag” that features MAC cosmetics, Kerastase hair products, VOX Vodka minis, a $100.00 gift certificate from Torneau and a $25.00 gift certificate from M2M boutique.

The evening will also feature the annual auction of designer holiday wreaths from noted local and national artists, designers and businesses such as Benjamin Taylor & Associates, Bonaparte Antiques, Betsey Johnson, David Rockwell, Jay Strongwater, Saks Fifth Avenue and Todd Oldham.

20 years of fighting AIDS
DIFFA is presently observing its 20th year as one of the largest funders of HIV/AIDS service and education programs in the U.S. Since its founding in 1984, DIFFA has mobilized the resources of the design communities to provide more than $31 million to hundreds of AIDS organizations nationwide.

Starting with volunteers from fashion, interior design, furnishings and architecture, supporters of DIFFA now come from every field associated with fine design. With 15 chapters nationwide, DIFFA has also been an innovative agent in drawing local and national corporations into the fight against the epidemic, and enjoys tremendous support from the business community.

Tickets to Glitter Ball are $60.00 per person and include an open bar, dessert bites and that Outrageous Goodie Bag.
